Cllr rescues power-less lifesavers

We need electricity to efficiently conduct the service, to power our two-way radio communication, public announcements and telephones on Winklespruit bathing beach.

EDITOR – I would like you to print a thank you on behalf of the Winklespruit Surf Lifesaving Club (WSLC) and its lifesavers.

On Friday evening, some members and professional lifeguards reported that there was no electricity in the lifesaving office and clubhouse, due to a fire further along the road towards or in the car-park. The municipality attended but did not fix the problem. Instead they put safety measures in place and disappeared. I assume they were not aware that the lifesaving facility and public toilets and showers run off the same circuit, and thus deemed the broken streetlights as unimportant.

We need electricity to efficiently conduct the service, to power our two-way radio communication, public announcements and telephones on Winklespruit bathing beach. After trying to contact the electricity department without much success, I phoned our ward councillor, Andre Beetge for help.

I personally did not think he would answer his phone at about 7.20pm on a Friday night. To my surprise Cllr Beetge answered his phone on the third ring and after explaining the reason for my call, he promised to look into the matter. Not even 20 minutes later, Cllr Beetge arrived to check for himself.

The electricity was restored before midnight.

A great thank you to Cllr Beetge for helping us so that the duties of our lifesavers could be done without risk or disruption to the public and lifesavers themselves.
