Marriage proposal seals shark paddle out

Amanzimtoti couple get engaged a kilometre out to sea on World Oceans Day.

PADDLE Out for Sharks organiser Karen Wadsworth of Toti had even more cause to celebrate World Oceans Day on 8 June when her boyfriend, Stephen Borain, also of Toti, proposed to her at the end of the ceremony, held just off backline at Scottburgh main beach.

Wadsworth was absolutely thrilled as the couple first met at the 2013 Paddle Out for Sharks and it was love at first sight. “I had absolutely no idea that Stephen was going to propose. He had planned it for a while and made a banner a week before the paddle out,” said Karen.

The couple are scuba divers, keen conservationists and nature lovers. “We are both happy. It is an incredible feeling to find your soul mate.”

They don’t have any immediate plans to tie the knot. “We are enjoying being in our own love bubble.”

Paddle Out for Sharks is an annual event which started in 2012 to raise awareness about the plight of sharks and help to change perceptions about these apex predators that play a vital role in maintaining a healthy marine ecosystem.
