Participate in Toti cancer relay for life

Event is to raise awareness about cancer and raise funds.

The Cansa Relay For Life takes place at Kingsway High School on Saturday, 20 September from 5pm to 5am.

The 12-event, which is part of an international movement that unites cancer survivors and the communities that care about them, was scheduled for last month, but was postponed.

Relay For Life is a fun, overnight team event, which is volunteer-driven and community-owned.

“The event is to raise awareness about cancer and raise funds for the fight against cancer,” said media representative for Amanzimtoti, Errol Theron.

“Many of you know of a family member or friend suffering from or having died from this disease.

Survivors and carers need not be in a team. Companies, schools, clubs and the community are invited to enter as individuals and will be put into teams where necessary.”

Teams consisting of between 10 and 15 people may enter at a cost of R600 per team. Youth teams pay R400 and are asked to help with some fundraising.

At least one team member must walk around the track at all times for 18 to 24 hours, to mirror the fact that cancer neither slumbers nor sleeps.

The Relay For Life event opens with a heartfelt survivors lap, honouring cancer survivors and their caregivers.

After sunset, tribute is paid in a very emotive luminaria ceremony by lighting candles inside luminaria bags which encircle the track. These luminaria bags are dedicated to those who have lost their battle, to those who are still fighting and to those who have won their struggle against cancer.

Teams are encouraged to raise funds in support of the fight against cancer in the region where the relay is being held. Teams camp out overnight around the track and enjoy entertainment, fun and camaraderie in a festival-like atmosphere.
