Toti ranger on US-sponsored leadership visit

Dirk is involved with anti-rhino poaching operations.

Dirk Swart, a former Kingsway High School Scholar and first Amanzimtoti Springbok Scout, was invited by the United States government to visit the country on an international visitors leadership programme in his capacity as a section ranger at the Hluhluwe Game Reserve.

He left for the USA on Friday, 2 May and will return on Sunday, 25 May.

In addition to his normal responsibilities, Dirk is also actively involved with anti-rhino poaching operations, where he patrols Hluhluwe and Imfolozi game reserves with a Bat Hawk spotter aircraft.

“In his letter to Dirk, written on behalf of the United States government, the ambassador of the United States embassy in Pretoria mentioned that during his visit, Dirk will be the guest, not only of the US government, but also of the American people, many of whom will participate voluntarily as hosts, guides and community programme organisers in their overall system of educational and cultural exchange programmes,” said his father, Charles.

“He will have the opportunity to see some of the country, visit counterparts in his profession and other persons of interest to him and learn what makes American society what it is.

In return they hope he will use the occasion, through the many people he will meet, to give Americans the opportunity to learn about him and his country.”
