Outreach minded Musa left high and dry over study bursary

Musa is still waiting for his letter of confirmation.

A civic-minded Ilovu Township man, who was promised a bursary from the Department of Health to start studying at Unisa in January, has been left high and dry.

Musa Mvula, a member of Sweetwaters Full Gospel Church, started his own sports ministry called the New Direction Youth Development Club in June 2011 to share the gospel, develop leadership qualities within the youth, help them to discover and fulfill their dreams, as well as equip them to play sport and to fight poverty.

New Direction now boasts 65 boys and girls who make up three soccer and two netball teams.

Musa has extended his service to school outreach, where he visits local schools and teach lifeskills and he teaches a leadership programme at Seed of Hope called Live Out Loud.

Musa’s next goal is to study psychological counselling through the University of South Africa. This degree will help him assist the youth and children who are experiencing trauma. As funds are limited, Musa needs a bursary for this course.

In November he posted the Sun article on his achievements to the national Department of Health in the hope of receiving a bursary.

“I received a call from the department to go to Unisa and get proof of admission,” said Musa. “The woman I spoke to said they are busy with my application and it will get approved.”

Bouyed by this good news, Musa sent off his proof of admission. “When I contacted them again, they said they had received the proof and they will send off a letter of confirmation, they were just waiting for the director to sign it.”

Musa waited for his letter of confirmation in December, to no avail. He had register for his courses, but had no funds to start studying.

In response to the Sun’s queries, the KZN Department of Health’s manager of external communication, Sebe Zwane said Musa’s name does not appear on their bursary programme. “According to our records we do not have such a student granted a bursary through this office,” she said.

“I had applied to other organisations, but when the Department of Health contacted me to say my application will be successful, I halted all my other applications,” said a disappointed Musa. “Now I’m not studying and I’ve lost a whole semester.”
