Lions host high tea for Jabulani seniors

Jabulani was opened to provide comfortable, safe and affordable accommodation for low-income members of the community.

Ethekwini South Lions Club hosted a high tea party at Jabulani Home for the Aged.

Jabulani is owned and administered by the Kingsburgh Welfare Organisation For The Aged. It is home to 81 senior citizens, most of whom have no income other than the government social welfare grant.

This organisation receives no government funding. It relies on the generosity of local businesses and the community, as well as the hard work of its residents to run and maintain Jabulani.

“When Jabulani was opened almost 40 years ago, the vision was to provide comfortable, safe and, most importantly, affordable accommodation for low-income members of our community,” said eThekwini South Lions Club PRO, Mandy Roux.

“That is still its vision. Over the years it has provided a home of their own to thousands of senior citizens who would have otherwise had to live with family or in hostels. They have retained their independence and happiness for as long as they are able to care for themselves.”

Mandy is also the projects chairman for the Lions club and part of her portfolio is senior citizens, so she decided to spoil the residents with cake and tea. “We had lots of cakes and tarts and we decorated the tables. Residents were also given little gifts as well. The eats were all made by the Lions. A buffet table was laid out and residents were served tea or coffee and the staff enjoyed a day off as the Lions also served and washed the dishes.”
