Motorists must exercise patience

He showed such impatience by flicking his lights behind me, which was a sign to say I was driving slowly.

EDITOR – At about 6.30pm on Sunday, 20 April I was driving with my family from Hlokozi Highflats area.

Due to the potholes on that road I was driving around 80km/h because I have previously had my car’s tyre burst due to the bad condition of the road.

I am not talking about potholes but about the accident that happened about 2km before Umzinto, with an Opel Astra driver.

He showed such impatience by flicking his lights behind me,which was a sign to say I was driving slowly. In front of me was a truck that, when it was clear to do so, I overtook.

Looking in my rearview mirror, I saw the same driver overtaking the same truck towards the bend and in the blink of an eye, there was a big bang with the Nissan bakkie driving towards the opposite direction and the truck.

The reasons for the crash were impatience, not adhering to the rules of the road and possibly driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police cannot be everywhere all the time, but if we as drivers change our attitude and drive with caution, we will never have people who lose their lives and become statistics.

It is so sad when you experience a situation where innocent lives become victims because of a driver who makes a stupid mistake. My heart goes out to the family of the Nissan bakkie driver who lost his life. I don’t know what happened to the Astra driver, but he possibly died as well.

The truck driver had nothing to do with the cause of an accident, and luckily the driver escaped without injuries. To all drivers, please drive safely and responsibly.
