Shepards will celebrate half a century together.

TOTI couple, Peter and Peggy Shepard’s love has endured for a half a century,as they prepare to commemorate their wedding anniversary on Friday, 25 April.

They met in Rhodesia, while Peter was in the army. “I was coming out of a pub when I bumped into Peggy. She was in tears as her boyfriend had left her in the lurch. I paid for a taxi for her to get home,” said Peter.

Soon after their first meeting, they bumped into each other regularly at various discos. They became engaged on 1 January, 1964 and were married four months later. They moved to South Africa in 1979 and settled locally.

Peter’s advices to other married couples is not to go to bed angry. “It is important to discuss things.” Peter retired in 2008. He now spends his time on the bowling green and helping in the garden in the complex where he lives, while Peggy potters around the house.

They have two children, Mandy and Marc and two grandsons, Sheldon and Brandon.
