EDITOR – I have been a resident of Umgababa Africa area for about three years.
I am experiencing a problem with the black flakes that are blown by the wind from burning sugarcane fields.
My observation is that sugarcane is burnt when the wind is blowing towards the south, towards black residential areas, either in the morning or afternoons. These flakes get into our houses and are a nuisance. You are forced to close windows and doors. If you have left washing on the line, you are in big trouble.
On Tuesday, 25 March I took my car to a car wash in the afternoon, but the next morning between 5.30am and 6am the car was just black. It is even worse if it lands on the dew.
My question goes to Illovo Sugar – why have I never experienced flaking in areas like Winklespruit, Illovo or Warner Beach? Is Illovo Sugar taking advantage of black communities? Surely there must be an alternative.
Illovo Sugar owes everyone an explanation regarding their policy on air pollution management.
