Bridge teams of four come to grand finale

All the boards played were duplicated so all the teams played the same boards each week.

LAST week saw the grand finale of the Amanzimtoti Bridge Club annual teams of four competition.

This year there were a record eight teams entered so the event ran over four weeks and the format was that each team played a 12 board match against each other; each team played two matches per week. All the boards played were duplicated so all the teams played the same boards each week, and each team did their scoring after each match. Scores were entered onto a database so accumulative scores were readily available.

At the end of the first round, Team Hogno was in the lead with 43 points, with Team Welch in second position with 41 points, then Team Smith in third with just 36 points. Fourth was Team Venter with 32 points.

After week two Team Welch took the lead with Team Smith in second place and Hogno down to third but Venter held on to fourth place. Points were 77, 74, 69, 66 respectively.

Welch took a tumble in week three and fell to fourth spot. Team Hogno had two good results from their third week matches and reclaimed top spot. Smith remained in second place and Venter worked up to third place. The points now were 112, 107, 103, 100.

By now each team had played six team matches, which left just one match to go. But, to enjoy two matches in week four the first match was to play the 7th team and thereafter the eight teams were split into two groups, top four and lower four and then a play off.

After the 7th round match, Smith managed to just clinch top spot with 127 points followed by Venter on 124 points. Welch and Hogno both sat on 103 points.

Final honours went to Team Venter with 144 points with Team Smith being the runners up on 142 points.

Other placing were Team Welch (136), Team Vale (135), Team Hogno (131), Team Harrison (107), Team Frans (85) and Team Heuer (76).

The chairman congratulates all the teams for the spirit in which the tournament was played and gives special accolades go to those who played in their first teams event.
