Cansa screenings look for permanent base

THE Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) has held several screening clinics for the disease in Toti over the last year, however it needs a permanent venue to be able to host them more regularly.

“Our past clinics have been very successful. We plan well in advance and see about 30 patients during a four-hour session,” said professional nurse, Heidi Thom who works for Cansa.

During the clinics, patients undergo clinical breast examinations, pap smears, prostate specifice blood tests to identify any abnormalities and tests for skin cancer. If funds are not available, a minimal fee is charged for the screenings, which covers the cost of laboratory tests, which are received within two weeks. However, if donations are available, screenings are done for free.

The clinics also focus on education and the early warning signs of cancer. “Nine out of 10 cancers are treatable, if caught early.”

Ideally, Heidi would like a satellite clinic set-up in Toti. However, to keep the project ongoing, committed volunteers are needed to work hand-in hand with Cansa. To become a volunteer, one needs to attend a 10-hour course over two days, which focuses on the different types of cancers, home visits and counselling.

“Volunteers play a vital role, they are the ‘eyes and ears’ in our community, as they will know the needs. They also fill various roles such as working in admin, fundraising or are involved in other tasks.”

If anyone is able to provide a venue or would like to volunteer, contact Marie Bowker on 031-916-1815 or 079-386-4185 or Heidi on 072-457-4111 or the Cansa office on 039-682-7680.
