Good Samaritan at the skating rink

Deryn de Bruyn stepped in and helped her off the ice.

EDITOR – On Friday, 7 March, a young girl was skating at the Galleria Ice Rink.

She fell and snapped her lower leg, leaving it dangling.

Deryn de Bruyn stepped in and helped her off the ice. While he was helping, an elderly man approached Deryn with blood running down his face. He had tripped and cut his head open.

While the paramedics attended to the young girl, Deryn helped the elderly man.

The ambulance would not take the young girl to the local hospital, as she didn’t have medical insurance.

Deryn took both the young girl and elderly man in his own car to the hospital. I think he deserves recognition as he is a wonderful person and always willing to help.

  1. well done to the ambulance people for standing their ground and teaching the little girl that she must seriously think about getting a job so that she can pay for medical aid and stop being a freeloader at the expense of society.

    smh.
(in case it’s missed, I’m being a tad sarcastic).

You missed the point of this article.

It shows that there are still good Samaritans out there in this world.

  3. I am the elderly man referred to in the article (eish, never thought of myself as such before). The young girl and I shared the ambulance. I was transported to Kingsway and I am not sure what happened to the young girl thereafter. I wished her well on leaving the ambulance and trust she is well on her way to a speedy recovery. I can only commend the people at the ice rink & the paramedics on the scene for their professionalism in dealing with her injury and then attending to me swiftly after my mishap. We definitely did not leave the Galleria mall in a private vehicle.

  4. Simone, you stated that he looked after both patients, which he didn’t, that the ambulance refused to take them to hospital, which they didn’t and that he took them both to hospital which he didn’t. So most of your letter was not factual and in fact painted the ambulance service in a really bad light and could actually be taken further.
