City wants you to clean up your act

The municipality has launched a cleaning programme and is calling on citizens to get involved.

ETHEKWINI Municipality launched its ‘Clean my City’ programme this morning, 7 March with the aim of cleaning up the region and changing attitudes towards the use of public spaces.

Mayor James Nxumalo introduced the programme because of social ills and service delivery problems in certain parts of eThekwini. “This intervention aims to address environmental challenges and ensure that together we build a sustainable city. It is a co-ordinated approach involving all municipal departments as well as other stakeholders, such as communities, businesses, non-governmental organisations, police and national and provincial government departments,” said Nxumalo.

“We all have a responsibility to create a sustainable city, which can be enjoyed by future generations. We welcome input from all stakeholders and are committed to work with you to take our city forward. The campaign involves influencing people’s attitudes towards the cleanliness and maintenance of their public spaces and by-law enforcement.”

A small peice of land in Umlazi was cleaned-up as the first step in the programme and communities all over eThekwini were urged to take part in the programme by cleaning up their neighbourhoods between 10 and 11am.
