Two nabbed for false hijacking claim

TWO men, aged 33 and 37, were arrested in Isipingo on Tuesday, 21 January by members of the Phoenix Crime Intelligence Unit and Umhlali K9 Unit for opening a false hijacking case.

Police also recovered stolen goods to the value of R350,000.

“On 19 December, 2013 a case of hijacking was opened at Empangeni police station. A sub-contract driver for South African Breweries alleged he was hijacked on the N2 north bound near Tongaat tollgate while he was on his way to deliver stock at Empangeni. The truck was loaded with 2,156 cases of beer. The case docket was transferred to Tongaat police station and investigated by Phoenix Crime Intelligence Unit,” said Capt Thulani Zwane of the KZN police media centre.

“Through intensive investigation a 37-year-old driver was arrested in Isipingo. His arrest led to the arrest of his 33-year-old accomplice. Investigations revealed the driver registered a false case and the hijacking had been well-planned. The stock was recovered at a bottle store in D section in Umlazi. The men will be charged for theft and perjury and will appear in the Verulam Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 24 January.

Provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, applauded members for their good work “We warn the public not to open false cases because our members will leave no stone unturned in investigating such cases,” she said.
