Cell phone thief victim gets his own back

A THIEF got more than he bargained for when he was tracked by the owner of a stolen iPhone via the 'find my phone' app and arrested by CCPO in the early hours of Wednesday, 22 January.

The man burgled a house in Meuman Place in Warner Beach at about 2.30am and stole cash, the iPhone and other items before fleeing. The owner alerted CCPO and a search was initiated.

The owner activated the search application on the phone and was able to track the exact movement of the thief. The information was relayed to CCPO personnel, who continued with the search.

The man caught a train between Warner Beach and Toti and was nabbed at about 5.30am when he alighted at Toti station.

All the stolen property was in a backpack, which the owner identified, except another cellphone and a laptop. On being questioned, the man claimed he had broken into a flat near the station, also in Warner Beach and stolen the goods. CCPO recovered a second bag with more items, which the thief had concealed in bushes in Warner Beach.

He had forced opened the front door, unbeknown to the owner who was asleep. Only when CCPO knocked on the door with their valuables, did they realise they had been robbed.

It is believed the thief had been released from Westville Prison about a month ago, where he had served time for a housebreaking in Clansthal.
