Angela commits her mom’s memories to the page

Inspired by her mother's stories of her youth, a Toti author has penned her first novel.

Angela Ceretto’s novel ‘By Bread Alone’ is published by AuthorHouse in the UK and has already sold in excess of 2,000 copies.

“The book is the story of my mother’s life,” said Angela. “She had a tough upbringing. As a child, she would always tell me I could write a book about my life – so I decide to.”

The books recounts how her mother Lee was orphaned as a young girl after her widow mother dies while aborting a child conceived out of wedlock.

Lee suffered at the hands of a cruel foster mother and readers will be held spellbound to see if she finds true happiness.

Lee became senile in her last years, so Angela called on family and friends for research.

She moved to Toti from Johannesburg when she retired five years ago and had no experience in writing, except reading some books on the subject.

“By Bread Alone is written from the heart and as I wrote it for my mom to read, it is written very simplely. The book took me five years to write. My mother was still alive when I finished, so she got to read it two weeks before she died. She asked that I put a copy in her coffin when she died, which I did. Writing the book was a very emotional experience for me, but I’m glad I did it.”
