Alien Beach Rd trees removed

Toti residents are up in arms about the removal of the trees along Beach Road in the vicinity of Toti main beach.

Ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge confirmed 15 mature cassurina trees are in process of being removed.

“This was not an ad hoc decision, but follows in the wake of a horticulturist assessment of the trees, in addition to the fact that the trees are not indigenous to KZN.

While eThekwini Municipality would prefer to replace the trees with red milkwood, I consulted Sapphire Coast Toti Tourism to explore the possibility of replacing with species of indigenous palm. Not only will this enhance the tropical setting of the area, but alleviate any possible mess associated with milkwood trees.”

The removed cassurinas will be cut into manageable sections and used in dune rejuvenation, starting from the parking area north of the water park and continuing in the direction of Pipeline beach.
