City lambasted for not naming river polluter

A factory discharging waste, combined with a massive sewage spill, has led to a major fish kill in the Isipingo River.

The water is black in colour with an oily surface and the area reeks of rotting fish.

eThekwini Municipality has come under fire as it refuses to name the factory. One person who has called for the factory to be named and shamed is ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge, who first brought the fish-kill to the Sun’s attention.

“The city shouldn’t be hiding anything,” he said. “Which factory it is should be mentioned. If the city has concrete evidence, it must name the company”

“Action has been taken against the factory,” said municipal spokesman, Thabo Mofokeng, who would not disclose its name, the type of pollutant or what action the city had taken.

The sewage spill occurred on Wednesday, 8 January from the Jeffels Road pump station after a 400mm sewer pipe had failed after a bracket that holds up the pipe was stolen. The municipality said it would take some time to repair the sewer line.

Cllr Beetge, fed up with continued waste water problems, especially in the South, has called for a committee to be formed. “I am making a recommendation that such a watchdog committee by implemented. Continued sewage leaks are escalating and we need to know why.”
