Take steps to safeguard your property

TO ensure a safe and secure festive season, the police encourages everyone to take precautionary measures to safe-guard themselves and their property during Christmas holidays.

Residents are urged not to leave their houses unoccupied. Rather let a relative or trustworthy person take care of the house and inform your neighbours about your absence

Apply the following safety tips as part of a home security check list:

* Ensure your house number is clearly visible from the street.

* Cut or trim trees and shrubs to make it difficult for criminals to hide.

*Where possible, have security screens on doors, deadbolts or deadlocks and an alarm fitted to your home.

* Ensure that your home is well lit.

* Store tools and ladders properly and away from criminals.

* Fit automatic timer or sensors lights.

* Make use of peep holes before opening the door when responding to a knock.

* Lock the meter box.

* Engrave your valuables and other household property.

* Create and keep safe a serial number book for all serial-numbered property.

* Join local crime prevention initiatives and neighbourhood watches.
