Securing Your Home

Some advice for securing your home before going away on holiday

•    The first step to avoiding unwelcome visitors is to lock them out, and your front door is their first obstacle. If someone can get in your front door, it is easier to get your belongings out. It therefore pays to install the best locks possible.

•    Guard against exposed hinges as they can be easily penetrated by breaking the hinge pin – making breaking and entering your home easier for criminals. Remember, a good door with locks is ineffective if the frame is not of sturdy construction.

•    A 180-degree peephole is a worthwhile investment as this allows you to see who is at your door before opening it. It is equally important to ensure your front door area is clearly lit at night.

•    Remember the golden rule: Do not ever open your door to strangers or people who say they represent a well known or reputable company – always ask for identification and always confirm this with their employer. If you still feel uneasy, do not allow them access onto your property.

•    If you install a security gate, make sure that it cannot be easily forced or broken open. A triple-locking gate is one of the most difficult to break open and is a worthwhile investment if you want to leave your front door open.

•    To prevent entry via windows, consider installing keylocks. Use the same brand of lock throughout so it is convenient to use. Keep any trees or shrubs around your windows trimmed as they provide a good hiding place for burglars.

•    Installing lights around your home that are activated by movement can deter unwelcome visitors, while exterior sensor lights will light the path to the front door when you return home. Perimeter floodlights can be used when you are home alone or away, with timers to activate them if you are on holiday.
