SOUTH African National Blood Services (SANBS) calls on the public to donate blood as there is a critical blood shortage in the province.

“As of 8 November, we are on 0.9 day’s cover. Our blood stocks are extremely low, in particular group O blood, the universal blood group that can be given to anyone in an emergency. We rely heavily on schools and they are busy with year-end examinations. This may have contributed to the blood shortage. However, as we move to the festive season, we are looking to organisations, places of worship and individuals to support our call and to all our regular donors to make their way to our donor centres and help us maintain adequate stocks,” said marketing consultant, Sifiso Khoza.

SANBS appeals to people who are in good health, live a healthy lifestyle, weigh over 50kg, live a sexually safe lifestyle and who are between the ages of 16 and 65 to donate blood. A stock level of five days is required.
