Fatal crash leaves many questions

THE family of Cody Cass (23), who died after his car slammed into a brick structure on San Gabriel Road, Warner Beach early on Saturday morning, November 2, are trying to piece together the final hours of his life.

They would appreciate information from anyone who may have witnessed the crash.
Speaking to the Sun on Wednesday morning, 6 November, just hours before they paid tribute to him at his funeral service, his family were puzzled as to what may have led him to be driving in San Gabriel Road after he had been out playing pool with friends all night and was returning from the direction of Kingsway in Warner Beach.
He had dropped off a friend in St Winifreds at about 3am, but no-one knows what happened after that. Cody’s black Ford Ka landed on its roof at about 5.10am on Saturday, after he lost control, swerved across the centre median and collided with a brick structure which stood about a metre high on the other side of the road. Netcare 911 paramedics who responded found him trapped in the crumpled remains of the car, but he had died before their arrival.
The remains of brick structure have since become a memorial site, and flowers are strewn in remembrance, along with messages of tribute painted on the bricks.

Cody lived with his grandmother Joan Cass and was described as a quiet boy with a gentle soul. The family have been overwhelmed by the concern expressed in the wake of his death and have come to appreciate how popular and well loved he was. “He always helped out if he knew someone needed him,” said a family member.
Having battled Crohn’s disease, Cody suffered many setbacks in life, but despite this, had risen above the challenges and made a success of his life. “Through it all, he’d made a name for himself.”
Having schooled at George Campbell High after attending Warner Beach Primary School, Cody had sold his beloved guitar to help pay for his studies to qualify in CNC programming. He’d recently been employed at Design Engineers after serving an internship.
