Trio of peace poster creators lauded

THREE pupils' artwork from two local school's have been chosen for the second round of the Lions Peace Poster contest.

Umbogintwini Primary grade 6 pupil, Leo Magwaza placed first and won R500 cash for himself and R500 for his school. The runner-up was grade 7 Kuswag pupil, Charl Ellis who won R300 and the same amount for his school. Third place went to Ronan van Heerden, also of Kuswag who won R100 and R100 for the school.

The international contest has been running for some 26 years now. The three Lions clubs, Kingsburgh, Toti and eThekwini South have been working together to promote this contest for the past few years.

The theme this year is ‘Our World, Our Future’ and the posters were judged by local artists on Thursday, 17 October based on originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme.

The three posters will be judged at district level in November. If successful, the posters will go to multiple district level judging, before winners are chosen to represent South Africa.

Ultimately all winners from across the world, about 375,000 will be judged early next year at Lions headquarters in the USA.

The grand prize winner will receive a cash prize of US$ 5,000 plus a trip accompanied by a parent or guardian to the awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations.

Each of 23 merit award winners will receive a cash award of US$500.
