Drug network bust in Toti

MEMBERS of KwaDukuza Cluster task team and the National Intervention Unit armed with a search warrant swooped on the premises of a suspected drug dealer in Amanzimtoti at about 2.30pm on Monday, 14 October.

“Inside the premises 840 mandrax tablets with a street value of R42,000 and cash of R55,000 that supported evidence of drug dealing were seized. A man and two women were arrested in the house,” said Col Jay Naicker of the KZN police media centre.

A follow-up investigation was carried out when the owner of the property arrived, which led police to Unit 3 in Chatsworth where two bags were discovered in a white BMW X5.

“The bags contained 1½ kg of cocaine, cutting agents, packaging material used for drug distribution, an electric mixer, electronic scale, mixing utensils and R36,450 cash. The street value of the cocaine is estimated at R500,000.

The BMW X5 was seized, along with a Mercedes Benz and a VW Jetta. The kingpin as well as the owner of the BMW were also arrested. The Asset Forfeiture Unit was also involved in the operation and will look into the seizure of property and assets of the accused, as he was not employed and had amassed a huge amount of wealth as a result of his illicit operations.”

The five will be charged with dealing in drugs and are expected to appear in Durban Magistrate’s Court soon.

Provincial commissioner for KZN, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the police officers on their commitment to rid the streets of drug dealers. “While we as police continue to break the backs of drug dealers, we implore other roleplayers in the community to address the root causes that lead our youth to turn to drugs at such a young age,” she said.
