Koby’s monster ride seals second at jnr champs

Athlone Park surfer, Koby Oberholzer (13) battled enormous walls of water, reaching more than three times his height to clinch second place in the boys U13 event at the SA junior surfing champs in Jeffreys Bay on Sunday, 29 September.

After organisers decided not to run any girls heats in the massive surf, the U13 boys were the first to take to the water and it took the pint-sized Warner Beach Prep pupil to show the way when he caught a set wave in the second heat, rode it all the way down the point to be awarded 9.0 points out of 10 by the judges.

However, in the last 30 seconds of the heat, Max Elkington of Western Province caught the wave of his life to scoop the win.

“I’m pretty stoked with second place, although I was hoping to win,” said Koby. “Second is my best result to date in the SA champs. This was the biggest surf I’ve ever seen at Surf Point. The waves are normally small there. We get big waves in Toti, so I’m used to it.”
