Golden oldies do battle for glory

PREPARATIONS are well underway for the Amanzimtoti Golden Oldies Games from Tuesday to Friday, 1 to 4 October, which will see some 220 participants battle for glory.

“It is only fitting the games start on 1 October, as it coincides with international day for the elderly,” said Elize Potgieter of the organising committee.

The official opening is at 9am at Tabor Hall in Middleton Road, Winklespruit. There will be a choir performance, gym trim display, followed by five group games.

On Wednesday, participants will have the opportunity to strut their stuff at a fancy dress parade at Lords and Legends at Hutchison Park.

“Ten semi-finalists will be chosen and from among them we will choose the ‘funniest’, ‘most original’ and ‘most daring’,” said Elize.

Overall there are six teams, Mooi Hawens, Tabor, Poinsettia Park, Jabulani, Ezimangweni and Ilfracombe.

On Thursday, the teams will be back at Tabor hall, where they will participate in six individual games. Friday will see the closing of the event, a prize giving ceremony, a line dancing demonstration and choir performance.

“We started planning two months ago and excitement is building. The purpose of the games are to get the elderly in the community and institutions together. They all have the same interests and it is an opportunity for them to socialise. It doesn’t mean if they are old, they can’t have fun.”
