Sewing group hopes to stitch up orders for uniforms

IGUGU Labantu, a sewing project in Nsimbini is growing in leaps and bounds and aims to secure orders from local schools for uniforms.

Having started in a small room three years ago, the owner of the building recently gave Igugu permission to use the whole building, which takes an extra three rooms.

With the assistance of A Centre that Serves (ACTS), a Toti-based NPO which partners with community projects, they have received four sewing and four knitting machines.

The project is currently manufacturing school uniforms, traditional and formal wear, bags and beadwork.

Gcina teaches 13 women to design, make patterns and sew. “The women will undergo 12 months training. I want them to use their skills to eventually earn an income,” he said.

“We are looking for bigger sewing orders, as we have an order from a local crèche. Ideally we would like to sew more school uniforms. Income generated will go back into the project.”

However, Igugu Labantu does not only concentrate on sewing, it is actively involved in beadwork and gardening.

If anyone is able to assist with donations of material and other sewing paraphernalia, contact Benjamin at ACTS on 031-914-2196.
