Isipingo NGO ensures pupils don’t go hungry

An early childhood development (ECD) centre was opened at the House of David community centre in Isipingo.

The centre is an NGO that has been operating in the Isipingo and surrounding areas for many years.  It is the brainchild of Shailen Singh, who has worked with Focus on the Family and is trained to run programmes in parenting and life skills.
“We have had community projects running in various areas such as Dakota, Malagazi and Isipingo,” said Shailen. “We distribute Bibles, food hampers, clothes and, most importantly, pray for the sick in those communities. Our outreach has impacted over 450 pupils in five Isipingo schools over the past seven years.”
The NGO recently learnt some pupils face a challenge in respect of basic needs.  “We started a lunch club where 40 to 60 pupils in four different schools are given a special treat once a month. The NGO also provides toiletry hampers to indigent pupils.
“We offer counselling comprising of grief, trauma, pre-marital and youth empowerment. We have an in-house physiotherapist, who kindly offers his services free of charge. Our services are available after hours and on weekends at the centre.
“Our ECD facility can accommodate 10 to15 orphans from surrounding areas. The children have breakfast at 8am, before they are taught the normal school curriculum by a qualified ECD teacher until lunchtime and then they go home at 1pm. We try our best to offer a helping hand to uplift the community.”
