Catch of a lifetime for ROV finder

A reward is being offered for the recovery of a remote controlled underwater inspection vehicle (ROV) which has broken its tow and is floating somewhere off Durban.

This ROV was being used off the Toti coast on Sunday, 2 September and is expected to wash up on one of Durban’s beaches in the next few days.

The insurers have offered a reward of R25,000 for its return. “This would be the catch of the season for any lucky fisherman,” said marine surveyor, Dave Miller.

“The unit is probably floating just below the surface, and is trailing about 30 metres of line behind it. It had initially washed northwards, but may well be heading southwards again.

It was spotted by a helicopter on Sunday afternoon at a position just south of the harbour mouth, heading north east.”

The unit is 100cm in length, 60cm in width and 50cm in height and easily identifable by its bright yellow cover. Anyone who finds it should contact the owner Anton Kieser on 083-500-0422 or Dave on 082-448-8891.

Just to add, the ROV weighs about 120 Kg, so recovering her will require a boat with lifting gear. If sighted, please contact us immediately…..
