Make time to donate blood

SEPTEMBER is traditionally a difficult time for blood donations for the South African National Blood Service (SANBS), due to preliminary exams and school holidays.

“There are not enough corporate blood drives to fill the gaps left by the absence of school and tertiary institutions blood drives. SANBS is required to source new blood drives and increase collection at existing blood drives in the regions in which it operates,” said head of KZN SANBS marketing, Charles Maharaj.

The organisation appeals to decision-makers at businesses and community centres who can be influential in people’s decisions to donate blood – people who are passionate about blood donation and want to make a difference at their companies.
“Blood donation is not a major priority in people’s lives and often they find it difficult to make the time to donate blood. SANBS wants to make blood donation as convenient as possible by ensuring drives are conducted at places of work or where it is convenient for people to donate blood, preferably companies and areas where there are a minimum of 200 people. It is able to provide blood drives with a minimum turnout of 20 blood donors.”

If your company, community organisation or school is interested in hosting a blood drive visit, call 0800-11-9031 or www.sanbs.org.za and simply fill in an application form.
Don’t let life get in the way of life and make saving lives so much easier. Your blood saves lives.

The core function of SANBS is to collect safe blood from donors, process and test for transfusion. The mission of the SANBS, an association of voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors, is to provide all patients with sufficient, safe, quality blood products and medical services related to blood transfusion, in an equitable and cost effective manner.
