Warming hearts this winter

Heartlands had the opportunity to give back to the community and paint a warm smile on children’s faces during a cold winter

To make winter a little warmer staff did a blanket handover to a day care centre, along with food for the children.
Phakamani Care Centre is home to 40 children after school during the week. Here children are in the care of pensioner ‘Mamma Cele’. She uses her pensioner’s grant to feed the children at the day care centre. On Thursday, 20 June Heartland took the time to give back.
After losing both her sons, Mamma Cele decided to help deal with her grief she would do something she enjoyed. In 2007, Mamma Cele started the day care and has been dependant on local businesses to help with food or donations to keep the care centre running.
“When I see children happy I know the children will not go home hungry,” said Mamma Cele. Most of the children who attend the day care live with their grandparents and the meal they receive at the day care is probably the only meal they’ll have.
Staff at Heartlands and team from Champions of Wellness were keen to get involved in a blanket hand-over. “I just want to help people,” said debtors clerk, Deneen Slater.
In the pipeline to help Phakamani Care Centre become self-sufficient, Heartlands hopes to help start up a vegetable garden and level the grounds.
On Thursday, 25 June Heartlands also distributed blankets to seniors from Ezimbokodweni.
