SCHOOLS from the Upper South Coast joined together on Friday, 1 November at the annual school beautification project prize giving ceremony held at Phindela Primary School in Folweni.

The project is in its 21st year and schools that take part in the project do so with eager enthusiasm.
Over the past 21 years the projects has gone from strength to strength due to partnerships with the Department of Health, Durban Solid Waste, Ethekwini Municipality and the Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs.

The aim of the school beautification project is to promote a healthy living environment in schools and to encourage as well as create awareness around these issues among educators and learners.

A team of representatives from the Department of Health, Ethekwini Municipality, Durban Solid Waste and Department of Agriculture visit each participating school three times a year. The categories for this project are best gardens, best maintained toilets, best maintained lawn and best neat classroom. These categories really had the schools buzzing and there was great improvement in the conditions at each school.
Mthombeni Primary School was the overall winning school, followed by Phindela Primary School in second place, and Yiboni Primary School in third place.
The most improved school for this year’s project was Adams Primary School.

The best co-ordinator prize is shared this year by Mr Ndlovu and Mrs Gumede of Phindela Primary School. The best supportive principal was Mr Zungu from Adams Primary School.
The school beautification committee would like to thank the following sponsors for their help in making the project a success:

•   Umbogintwini Industrial Association
•   Nadassen Transport
•   Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs
