CONGRATULATIONS to Umkomaas Golf Club’s (UGC) composite league team who played at Selborne Golf Estate last Sunday, 4 June defeating both Selborne and Royal Durban by a ‘country mile’.

Umkomaas won by 17 points on a score of 369, with Selborne in second place on 352 and Royal Durban lagging behind in third place with 333.

The UGC guys played well which is reflected in the score. Well done to them all.

The club is proud of its two women who travelled to Gauteng for the SA champs at Randpark Golf Club. Both Bryony Rogers and Michelle van der Merwe travelled up with two Golf Club members, Brenda Morgan and Lass Davies, last week in preparation for the championships which started on Monday. The results will be in next week’s Sun.

The Allerton league team played at Amanzimtoti Golf Club last Sunday. Unfortunately their opposition was the better team but the spirit in the Umkomaas team is as always, special. Well done to Saga Reddy who won all his games, both his singles and doubles games. Commiserations to the other team members who didn’t fare that well but welcome to Christopher Pillay who played in only his second game for the team and is settling down nicely.

The club welcomed visitors Mike and Magda Espach and Peter Bond to last Wednesday’s individual stableford competition. Derek Airey literally tore the course apart in what must have been a record for the most points in an individual competition. Derek’s winning score of 47 points saw him take first prize with ease. Rob Mathias was second, counting out Magda Espach for third, both on 38 points.

Last Saturday, 3 June the field was quite a bit smaller than usual but the competition was just as fierce to win the monthly medal and mug. It was good to see Lesley Fraser playing medal with the girls and re-joining UGC.

Taking the A division first prize was Jacques Kirstein on a magnificent 66. Jeff Govender took the B division prize with his good 69, with the C division winner Keith Vergottini counted out John Thompson into second place, both on a tremendous 66. With all the men’s scores in the upper-60’s, it was no wonder that the count-out belonged to Jacques Kirstein for ‘golfer of the month’. Congratulations to Jacques and all the players, especially the winners in their divisions.

The women played for the Sutcliffe Glass and it was Natalie Singer who won this month on 73. Lesa Vergottini won the least putts competition with on 31 putts for her round. Well done to Jacques Kirstein for the only two-club on the 9th hole. All the other side-competitions will be carried over to next weekend.

Saturday, 10 June is the alliance league – a week earlier than usual due to the Sardine Run being played over the following long weekend. Gather your team for the fifth round of this alliance game, the scores are really starting to hot up. Sunday, 11 June is open to social golf with the Sunday Bash meeting under the ‘lapa’ on the first tee at 10am. There are cash prizes as a reward for good golf. Be on the first tee mound at 10am for your place in a fourball. Call the office on 039-973-1042.

The Sardine Run is only 10 days away, starting on Thursday, 15 June until 17 June. Go to www.sardinegolf.co.za for more details.
