UPDATE: Prospecton taxi strike related to vehicle prices

Motorists should expect delays and disruption on the N2 and R102 until at least 1pm.

Introduced 10 years ago at a fully imported price of R220,000, the vehicle which is a mainstay in the taxi industry, is now locally produced at a retail price of R450,000 before interest, which the industry feels is far too expensive.

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has rallied its members to protest outside Toyota in Prospecton today.

Motorists should expect delays and disruption on the N2 and R102 until at least 1pm.

On Dickens Road, Durban-bound traffic from the N2 can be seen turning back across the centre median on Twini Hill, while other vehicles are turning back via the Dickens Road on-ramp to the N2 northbound carriageway. Traffic is congested on Kingsway and on smaller roads in the Athlone Park area and motorists are advised to abandon their efforts to reach Durban via Kingsway and the N2 this morning.
