Post-parkrun wedding proposal sets Amanzimtoti woman’s heart aflutter

“It just goes to show - you are never too old to find love,” - Lynette.

With Comrades fever in the air this week, it was fitting for a star-struck lover to propose to his sweetheart at the Amanzimtoti parkrun on Saturday, 27 May.

Lynette van Zyl (63) was running her 93rd parkrun, so her boyfriend Andre Rossouw (63) promised to travel to Toti to support her.

When she finished her run, she went to Sweetwaters Spur as per usual, but when she spotted champagne and champagne glasses on the table, she figured something was up.

“Andre went down on one knee and proposed to me,” she gushed. “It was wow. It is still wow. I had an idea he was up to something, but I was still bowled over. It was magic.”

Amanzimtoti parkrun is an organised, free, weekly, 5km timed run and walk that takes place on the beachfront every Saturday at 8am.

Lynette and Andre lost touch when she took early retirement and moved to Toti five years ago. He tracked her down and they resumed their romance.

For their future, Lynette is adamant she will not move back to Johannesburg, so Andre has agreed to relocate to the coast.
