Pistol shooters on target for national champs, thanks to sponsorship

Eight members of the club make up the KZN team.

Poinsettia Pistol Club members who are part of the KZN shooting team will leave for the national pistol shooting championships at the Bellville range with a new sponsor to assist in their quest to return with a bagful of medals.

Southern Sky Operations based in Durban’s Springfield Park has sponsored the team’s trip to Cape Town for the champs and they will be attired in new competition shirts.

“We purchase all our firearms and ammunition from Southern Sky Operations, so it’s great to have them as a sponsor,” said Poinsettia Pistol Club chairman, Danie Reyneke.

Eight members of the club make up the KZN team. They are Julie Meyer, Danie, his son Neil, Kevin Matthews, Gavin Jones, Dave Campbell, Enrico Boaga of Yellowwood Park, and Phillip Geyer.

As the only female in the team, Julie who hails from Montclair is a new club member who joined last July. She only started competitive shooting in November, but already bagged her first medal at the Eastern Province champs in February.

Experience will count in the team’s favour, as four members have more than 130 years of competition shooting experience between them – Danie (37 years), Enrico (40 years), Dave (40 years) and Phillip (15 years).

“The rest of the team are fairly young,” said Reyneke. “We have a strong team and our aim is to better our haul of 57 medals last year. Our new shirts look fantastic and we will wear them with pride at the opening ceremony on Monday morning, 24 April and the prizegiving on Friday afternoon, 28 April.

We thank Mike Erasmus of Southern Sky Operations for his sponsorship.

We hope to do well at the champs and return with as many medals as possible.”
