“After reading threats of strikes and stay-aways taking place last Friday, I decided to offer an alternative for those who weren’t keen to tackle the streets of Durban in protest,” said St Winifreds Methodist minister, Peter Butterworth.

Those who attended wrote their thoughts and prayers on 72 material flags, which have been strung up around the church, as ‘prayer flags’.

“One of the most humbling sights was seeing two domestic workers enter the church, remove their shoes and kneel down on the floor and pray in isiZulu,” said Peter. “I saw an array of different people all coming together, it was all I could’ve dreamed of and more.”

The minister believes that all people are unified as South Africans, whether church-goers or not, and he opened the doors of the church for everyone to reflect and pray. The church received feedback from the community, who thanked them for offering a place of peace and where one felt free to pray and reflect on the state of the country, as they wished to.

“This is not about race, but about combating corruption with our burning passion we have for the country we belong to,” he said.
