Toti 1st XV record loss in first Flya tourney match

FRIDAY, 10 March saw Ethekwini Refractories Amanzimtoti 1st XV take on College Rovers in the opening game of the Flya tournament at Crusaders.

The game started with the Toti boys applying all the pressure, which led to some penalties that were not converted into points.

The scoring was opened by Rovers after some average defending which allowed them to score in the corner. In the 37th minute, Toti’s forwards turned a ball over that saw Matthew McDonald sell a dummy and go in for a well-deserved try that was not converted.

Shortly thereafter the Toti forwards stole a ball in the line-out that was mauled up in a few phases which led to a penalty. Sheldon Higgo took over kicking duties and slotted the penalty to give Toti an 8–5 lead at half time.

In the second half, the game was played in both halves, but Rovers took their chances and ran in two tries with only one being converted to take the score to 17–8. Soon afterwards Toti won a line out five yards from the line that led to a well-worked try by Ryno Els under the poles, which was not converted. With the score at 17–13, Rovers were awarded a penalty that took the score to 20–13. Toti pressed for the rest of the game and although came close to scoring at times, they could not level the score which left the final score at 20–13 to Rovers. Man of the match choices were Matthew McDonald in the backline and Mike Uppink in the forwards.

Toti will now play Durban Collegians who lost to Crusaders on Friday, 17 March at Crusaders. Kick-off is at 6.30pm and the team asks that friends go along to support the boys.

In other games, the U20 team took on a very strong U20 Rovers side at Rovers. The Toti boys put up a very strong performance and despite their never-say-die attitude, they lost by only 15–5. Well done to the youngsters who are certain to make friends in Toti with their positive attitudes. Friday, 24 March sees the U20 boys at home against another strong U20 club in Varsity College. It will be great to see supporters go down in numbers to cheer on these talented youngsters.

The second team played a friendly against Queensburgh and outscored their opponents by seven tries to one.
