Ewoud steals show in inaugural 5km trail run

Diarise the next race which takes place on Friday, 31 March at 6pm

ABOUT 150 runners braved Friday night’s 5km trail run in Lower Illovo, a good show of support for the inaugural event.

Runners and walkers ventured through the sugar cane fields adjacent to the Illovo Business Park when the event kicked off at 6pm on Friday, 3 March from Toti Brewery.

The first of three trial runs hosted by local lifesaver and canoeist, Mark Barber together with several local roleplayers. it has been hailed a huge success. According to Mark, there were as many supporters present as runners. The weather played its part in providing the perfect backdrop.

First male runner Ewoud Grobler led the way, to fly the flag for locals in an amazing time of 17.33. Hot on his heels were Brent Chiazzari in a time of 18.25 and Thierry Platinckx in 18.53. The runners that placed in the top 10 were top class athletes, according to Mark.

The first woman home was Sabrina Ward in a time of 22.11. Leading the juniors for the men was Jayson Butter in 27.50 and for the women, Cleo Glenister in 28.28.

The organisers thank all who joined in the walk and run, sponsors Kwikspar, Illovo sugar, Silver and Gold Jewellers, Toti Brewing Co and Hypersure.

Diarise the next race which takes place on Friday, 31 March at 6pm. Both Bronwyn Leck and Karen Liebenberg have free entry into next race, as lucky draw winners.
