Vandals damage school science lab, library

One of the school pupils said security in the school is not sufficient

By Simiso Ngcobo

PUPILS of Nathaniel Sabelo High School, located in the Sobhisi area of Umbumbulu, worry over their safety and security after malicious damage which took place at the school at the end of January.

Siyabonga Magcaba, who works at the school as a clerk, told the Sun that while the intruders didn’t take much, they had vandalised the science lab and school library.

“It’s surprising because they didn’t take anything but they destroyed our board and they burned all the chemicals we use for our science classes. The school library was also vandalised and they also broke through the boards in some of the classes. We are still confused as to what they were looking for,” said Magcaba.

A case was opened at Umbumbulu police station by the school principal, S Ngcobo. “I opened the case for malicious damages, and Sgt Ngidi is still investigating. There are no suspects as yet,” said the principal.

Sanelisiwe Hlongwa, one of the school pupils, said security in the school is not sufficient. There is less safety security in our school, and we don’t even have a security guard at the gate. While we wish our school principal could work on this, we are glad that the incident took place during the weekend and that nobody was hurt,” said Sanelisiwe.

Magcaba also said that electrical cables were removed and burned inside the lab. “The cables which were removed from the walls were also burned together with the chemicals,” Magcaba continued.
