Surprise mixed trips win for Denise, Alf and Boet

THE finale of the ever-popular Hypersure mixed trips played to a packed veranda at Amanzimtoti Bowling Club last week.

Several teams could have won, but the team that came through at the end to surprise everyone was Denise and Alf Bingham and Boet Els, putting Heather Brown, Martin Birch and Karen Shepherd second.

Greg McLeod, Alec and Nicky Stirzaker were third. Winning the plate B division were Pete Shepard, Gustav Somers and Amanda Ninow.

A huge vote of thanks goes to sponsors Hypersure who added to the fun of the six-week event by sponsoring prizes for all the winners and session winners, as well as lucky draws each week and cocktails at the prize-giving. Thanks also go to the organisers – Brian Crause, Neville Roscoe and Mike Groom, and to Al McGregor for keeping track of the scores.

This week’s competitions saw a tense quarter-final of the mixed pairs, with Greg McLeod and Marion Crouch prevailing over Doug and Lynn Joubert. Men’s handicap singles round two saw a marathon duel of 31 ends before Alec Stirzaker pulled off a two shot win against Ian Crouch. Also in round two Jeff van Belkum defeated Vince Phaal.

In the round three quarter-finals of the handicaps Jeff van Belkum lost to Steve Woor; and Wessie van der Westhuizen beat Mark Brodie, which means two novices are through to the semi-finals. Well done to them both.

In women’s handicaps round two Barbara Beamson beat Michelle Pitchers; Doreen Salmond beat Kathy Cox; and Pam Chalder-Royle beat Margaret van Belkum.

In the Perfect Delivery men’s 2-4-2 were Dallas Davis and Mark Brody first; Vince Marriott and Eric Klopper second; and Brad and Brian Cox the second session winners.

The Food-Lovers Market big chicks winners were Peter Callaghan, Clive Frank, Shane Tocher and Denise Bingham. Second prize went to Ian Crouch, Lofty van Tonder, Marion Crouch and Julie Sutherland. Tony Cam, Ken Leech, Jock Meldrum and Loulou Bingham took third prize. Second session went to Mark Brodie, Jeanne Alexander, Michelle Pitchers and Dave McMillan.

The 13th prize sponsored by Brian Pascoe was won by Brian Farmer, Andy Jones, Sylveigh Ananiadis and Les John (who celebrated his 80th birthday last week). Most bowls went to Owen Turner, Paul Davies, Steve Woor and Jacqui Birch. Thank you once again to Food Lovers Market for the generous prizes and to Dave Gardner who has been organising this competition for over 10 years.

The Damagers won the 100 Board at TGIF, with Willem Pelser’s tab drawn in the attendance draw. As he was not present, the pot rises to R200 next week. Shirley Coulter was present to try her luck in the key draw, but unfortunately couldn’t find the right key, so that prize rises to R6,530 next time.

Good bowling to the 11 men playing PN senior singles and eight men playing PN open singles which begins this Saturday, 25 February. Markers are still required for the games being held at ABC this weekend on Saturday and Sunday, 25 and 26 February, so volunteer your time to help your club. The list is on the board. As a result of the PN singles, there will be no social bowls on those dates.

Members celebrating a birthday next week are Gerald Gordon-Hughes, Denise Bingham, Jacqui Birch, Andrew Luck, Leon van Rensburg and Brian Pascoe. Many happy returns to them all, and best wishes for a speedy recovery to Robyn Hutton and all other members who are not in the best of health.

Finally, the club is looking for a permanent person to work behind the bar on Sundays, so contact Talla if you are interested.
