AWI enlightened on rights of older persons

What a great WI meeting, at which everyone enjoyed seeing and being together after the recess in December and January.

AT Amanzimtoti Women’s Institute’s (AWI) general meeting on Tuesday, 14 February, president Yvonne Dixie welcomed all members, and bade a special welcome to new member Auburn Ingram from Bridgevale Women’s Institute.

Yvonne thanked all the members who so willingly agreed to stand in during her absence Down Under.

She read a poem ‘Dust if you must’, which reminded members to not always rush through life.

Bessie Wessels has tendered her resignation, which AWI accepts with regret. Elna Visser has relocated to Middelberg. Lyn Sutherland is relocating to Pietermaritzburg to be near family, and will continue with her WI activities. AWI will really miss her and wish her happiness in this time of her life.

Yvonne advised members that Operation Bobbi Bear will be AWI’s charity for this year .

Thank you to Captain Charlene van der Spuy from Amanzimtoti SA Police Service for her valued visit to the AWI meeting to hand out pamphlets about the rights of older persons. It was very helpful and informative.

Next month is the annual general meeting and members were reminded to give thought to offering their services as convenors. Positions available are vice president, aggie, cookery, and possibly a tea co-ordinator.

After tea, AWI’s own talented Janet Jackman inspired everyone with her beautiful quilting projects.

The raffle this month was won by Jean Donkin, a beautiful quilted bag made and donated by Janet Jackman. Patricia McCann read a phantom story about a confused elderly woman which was most enjoyable.

What a great WI meeting, at which everyone enjoyed seeing and being together after the recess in December and January. It is so important to belong and be with kind friends.
