Dutch volunteer assists Hospice

Laura hails from a town called Vaassen in The Netherlands.

Khanya Hospice has welcomed another Dutch volunteer to its team.

Laura Starink, who hails from a town called Vaassen in The Netherlands, is a qualified pharmacist who decided to come to South Africa to have a working holiday. “Laura has been involved in smaller projects, but finds working and volunteering at Khanya Hospice very rewarding,” said CEO, Neil McDonald.

“Things are very different here than in The Netherlands,” said Laura.

“People here do things slowly – they walk slowly, they help you slowly in the hospitals, shops and banks. Only the taxis move fast.”

When Laura leaves Hospice at the end of the month, she will tour North Africa and from there head back to The Netherlands.

She enjoys the hot weather in SA and would like to come back soon to help Hospice in their new ward at the in-patient unit.

“There is such a great need and it will just be so much easier attending and looking after patients 24/7,” she said.

Hospice offers free palliative nursing care to people with life-threatening diseases and offers support to their families.
