Lovers of music, lovers for life

This man is unlike anyone else I have met before.

WHILE giving the cheapest of three bathroom installation quotes, Gavin Welsh met the lovely Lisa Warner in 2007 while he was living in England.

The two were friends for a few years and Lisa first came to visit SA in 2011.

They saw each other around every six months until Lisa eventually moved here in 2014. They have four sons, although none together. Gavin proposed live on Facebook last November and the musical lovers will be married at Splashy Fen in April, where everyone is invited. They are partners not only in their company, Gorilla Mist or their band, Gus Brown Band but also in the life they share.

The following is from a post Lisa shared on her Facebook page, Carbon Pixie:

He is pretty awesome, although almost my polar opposite.

Let me start by highlighting a few of our differences.

He is 14 inches taller than me, and more than double my weight.

He is a Sagittarius, I am a Taurus. Which is a very bizarre match, as you would know if you know this stuff.

His volume is always at 80%, I like to be closer to 20%. I am not talking about cell phones, I mean speech. If we could both be closer to 50, I think we could die and go to heaven.

When we fight he likes to speak (shout), and I like to write. This can be tricky.

But clearly not tricky enough to destroy what we have, as we both seem to realise that we are onto something good here. Let me give you a taster.

This man is unlike anyone else I have met before. He is fearless and vulnerable in the most brave kind of way. His heart is unzipped and bared. He will give you a piece if you ask.

You can hear this when he sings, which he does with utter confidence on stage, bringing crowds to their feet to dance all night. It doesn’t ever matter that he forgets all of the words. Gavin sings with friends too and while grocery shopping (at 80% volume of course), he sings in the shower and in the car. He sings whether he is happy, or mad. His beautiful, gravelly voice is a balm for my soul.

You can taste his heart when he cooks. The flavours are full, confident and loud. But they have subtle nuances, so you can’t help but groan as you eat. It becomes an experience, I am forced to concentrate as I chew. My boys know the moment they put a fork to their mouth if the food has been cooked by Gavin or I – he is that good.

He has never read Eckhart Tolle, but he is already naturally present.in.the.moment. How does he even know about that?

That presence makes life with him a true adventure, and he connects with EVERYBODY.

It can however be exhausting being his co-pilot. Never-ending streams of ideas flow from this man. And I have to write them all down for fear of losing them forever. And of course, he loses interest fast, and I am left with the admin of the tasks…..which amusingly means I often receive the praise for his genius. Shhh.

He is fearless, which has forced me to become stronger. To take a leap of faith. I think of life with him as being in the ocean. I am an almost non-swimmer, so keep that in mind. I used to gaze at the waves in awe, but now I am immersed within them. Relentless, pounding but beautiful and deathly exciting.

Luckily he has patience with me as I grow into my new skin. Not endless patience – he is human after all. His tongue can be sharp, and loud. I have mentioned that, right?

Our brains are wired completely differently, which undoubtedly causes issues, but the end goal is the same. Gavin calms me, and at the same time brings me to life. For me, he feels like home.
