UGC reschedules champs to March

There was a very good turn-out for Nelson's Sunday school golfing bash.

UMKOMAAS Golf Club’s (UGC) champs are almost upon us – the date has been changed due to a conflict with another rather important date on the golfing calendar.

The dates are now Saturday, 4 March and Sunday, 5 March – the relevant notices will be going up shortly so put your names down to play. For any further enquiries, call Sonny at the club who will be only too glad to help you.

There was a very good turn-out for Nelson’s Sunday school golfing bash. Anyone can play with this group, no matter what your handicap is. They are a super bunch of guys and the green fees have been dramatically reduced. This all happens between 10.30am for 11.30am tee off, so give Nelson a call on 082-428-9000 for more details. Obviously the prizes will vary from Sunday to Sunday, depending how many players there are and the first prize could be quite substantial.

Wednesday was the normal individual stableford. Club captain, Barrie Taylor welcomed visitors Steve Cullen and Herman Steyn. It was Vesa Suhonen who took the first prize by counting out Barrie Taylor into second place and brother, Warren Taylor into third spot, all three players on 39 points. Michelle van der Merwe walked off with the fourth prize with 38 points.

Saturday’s alliance competition was the forerunner to the alliance league which starts in February. Barrie Taylor welcomed Allan Eriksen, Dave Rickards and Nevin Allan to the club who joined in the competition. No-one is sure if the winners are going to stick to their team – maybe they should. They were John Thompson, Deneys Williamson, Jacques Kirstein and Liza-Marie Kruger on a winning score of 94. In second place was Sabiha Bacaus, Jacques Hulley, Dave Shepherd and Dave Robertson (Dream Team) on 91 points. The third team in the prizes were Rob Mathias, Simon van den Bosch, Chris Viljoen and Ken Koster (The Die Hards) with 90 points. Well done, teams.

Saga Reddy took home the jackpot with his 10 points and Jacques Kirstein scooped the hidden birdie on the sixth hole. There were six players who had two-clubs, one of the players repeated himself three times – Eric Morsner, Deneys Williamson and Christopher Pillay fourth; Jacques Kirstein and Dave Mulroy on the ninth; Sabiha Bacaus and Deneys Williamson on the 13th and Deneys Williamson (again) on the 17th. Well done Deneys and to all who scored birdies on the short holes.

This Saturday, 4 February is the Toyota Malanda monthly medal competition, which will be the last practise round for club champs which starts exactly a month from this medal round. There will be social golf on Sunday, 5 February. Do call the club about green fee rates on Sundays as they do vary according to time.

This is an early reminder that Sonny’s fundraising day is going to be on Saturday, 29 April and not in August as it usually is. A request to all members for prizes and/or monetary donations or sponsorship, to help in some way to make it a spectacular day. Last year, this event was most successful, so UGC invites any and all handicapped players to join in – it really is great fun. Call Sonny on 039-973-1042 to book your time and/or cart for this day.

The club has two potential members in the offing. Congratulations to Jennifer (Coxell) and Douglas Dustin on the birth of their daughter, Paige and to Richard and Chantal Coxell on the birth of their son, Cody. Granny Elma can’t wait to spoil them both and granddad Graham is very proud. There will be lots of baby-sitting offers coming your way – make use of them.

As aways, the Geriatrics play on Tuesdays and Fridays, quite early to tee-off at 6.30am. Give Graham a call on 083-325-5705 or Keith on 083-305-5740 – just to make sure they are playing on that particular day.

KidzGolf is very active on Saturday mornings between 8am and 9am, meeting on the practise green. Devlyn, Lindani and Mike look forward to seeing all the children to impart some of their vast knowledge of this wonderful game called golf. Parents are welcome to come down too – the dining room is open for tea, coffee and so on while you watch your youngsters learn something different.
