Pensioner beaten, tied up by Dingwall Rd burglar

The criminal tried to strangle him with a towel

By Holly Konig

AN elderly Toti resident was beaten by an intruder, who attempted to get away with valuables and the man’s car after he broke into his Dingwall Road home on the afternoon of Saturday, 21 January.

The pensioner became suspicious after noticing a misplaced bin lid lying on his kitchen floor. After checking inside the house, he found a man hiding in the bathroom.

The criminal tried to strangle him with a towel, before a struggle took place. The intruder held a knife to the man’s throat, warning him not to look at him. He threatened to kill him.

When the criminal demanded money and was told there wasn’t any kept in the house, he assaulted the pensioner with the knife, pushed him to the floor and threatened to cut off his genitals. He covered the victim’s face with a towel and tied his hands and feet together.

The thug ransacked the house and took the elderly man’s wallet with R300 cash and his credit card, demanding the PIN number. He also demanded the safe keys, laptop and jewellery. The intruder went outside to the car, then returned when the phone rang. Hearing the victim telling the caller that everything was alright, he returned to the car.

A responding armed response unit found the elderly man a few minutes later. They discovered the home owner’s car had been smashed into a wall on the premises.

Inside the car were two flat screen TVs, a box of wine, a DVD player, groceries and various items of clothing which belonged to the resident, as well as a pair of shoes which did not belong to him.

There was no sign of the criminal, who only managed to flee with the wallet.

The elderly man sustained multiple cuts to his body. Toti police are investigating a case of house robbery.
