CCPO keeps criminals on their toes

Snodey spotted a man wanted for theft in Main Road.

The Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) has had a busy week fighting crime in Amanzimtoti.

A housebreaker was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning, 22 November after he and an accomplice broke into an Inyoni Road premises.

CCPO committee member, George Snodey said they received a call about the break-in at about 3am.

“On his way to the scene, CCPO supervisor, Michael Mkhize received information from a Blue Security response officer that he had observed two men in Umdoni Road while rushing to another alarm activation in that area,” said Snodey.

The men were spotted by patrols under the Umdoni Road N2 bridge. Mkhize and a Blue Security CCPO vehicle responded and apprehended one of the men, while the other escaped.

He was handed over to Toti SAPS.

 

A home owner was attacked during a house robbery at Umdoni Grove about two hours later that morning. Two men entered the property at about 5.20am and demanded cash and cellphones from the home owner.

In an ensuing tussle, the resident hit one of the men with a spade but he was hit on his head with an unknown object and taken to hospital.

 

Barely five minutes later, the CCPO caught a man trying to break into a premises in Inyoni Crescent, while his accomplice escaped with a TV.

 

In a separate incident, Snodey spotted a man wanted for theft in Main Road on Monday, 21 November.

While working as a car guard in Doonside, the man was caught on CCTV footage breaking into a vehicle.

Snodey called for assistance and CCPO and Blue Security patrol officer, Mbuyiselo ‘Triple M’ Mdunjane assisted with apprehending the man, who was handed over to Toti SAPS.

 

On Saturday, 19 November a man was caught by Mkhize and Metro Police dog handler, Shawn Jooste attempting to steal copper pipes from a house in Bhengu Road.

“A resident saw a man jump over a gate and enter the property and reported it,” said Snodey.

Mkhize and his team managed to trap the man in the empty house.

“Unsure if the man was armed, Jooste and his dog China entered the premises and found the man hiding inside. He had already removed two long lengths of copper pipe.

He was arrested and handed over to Toti SAPS.

 

On Wednesday, 16 November a housebreaker was nabbed and stolen goods recovered after he and an accomplice broke into a house in Cloete Drive.

The CCPO received a call about the break-in at about 3pm.

“On arrival it was found the thieves had fled. A Chubb response officer who has access to the CCPO radio transmissions said he had spotted two men walking quickly towards the CBD.”

A search was conducted and the men were spotted near the Toti River bridge.

They split up and one escaped but the other fled into the CBD and was apprehended by CCPO’s Jason Hewitt.

Jason’s crew member found the stolen items hidden under the bridge.

The man was handed over to Toti SAPS.
