Scottburgh lifesaver inducted into hall of fame

Stacey has an unbelievable 52 world medals she won between 1994 and 2004.

A long-time Scottburgh lifesaver has been inducted into the world lifesaving hall of fame.

Derrick Whitting of South Africa was inducted into the Lifesaving Hall of Fame for international lifesaving, but Stacey Bowley (40) is the first South African to be inducted for international lifesaving sport.

“I felt honoured to hear I was inducted into the hall of fame,” said Stacey, who was born in Johannesburg but lived in Scottburgh for about 20 years and did her schooling there.

“I followed my brother into lifesaving. I started in 1991 and I am still involved.”

Stacey won two world titles while competing for Scottburgh.

In 1996 she moved to Durban and joined the Durban Lifesaving Club. She won a few more world titles while competing for the Durban-based club.

Stacey has an unbelievable 52 world medals she won between 1994 and 2004.

She was also presented with the State President’s Award in 1998 and was the first woman to captain the SA team to the world champs in Sydney 2000.

In 2006 she retired from competition. “I started coaching when I retired. In recent years I have focused on coaching nippers at Suncoast Pirates Lifesaving Club.”
