School swims as runners-up in TV show final

The programme will start airing on SABC 3 on Saturday, 5 November at 9am.

Kingsway High School finished as runners-up in the Sink or Swim challenge final.

The school was invited by the TV show SOS (Sink or Swim) to send a team of two girls and two boys all under the age of 16 for various challenges in the Midlands for the prelim rounds in September.

Eight KZN schools were pitted against each other in four challenges over four days. In an ironic twist of fate, Kingsway drew Amanzimtoti High as its opponent.

Grade 8 pupils, Berry-Maya Konig and Creighton Corris with grade 10’s Xola Bengani and grade 9’s Arlaicia Zondo excelled in the challenges of abseiling, obstacle course, zipline and orienteering to advance to the semi-finals that took place at Four Rivers Adventures in the Drakensberg from 2 to 5 October.

They competed against Fairvale Secondary of Wentworth and beat them in all three disciplines – zipline and archery, mountain boarding and bridge-building, and a puzzle – to contest the final from 7 to 9 October.

“In the final they took on Umbilo Secondary, also of Wentworth, in scuba diving, beach challenges and an obstacle course but lost by three points,” said Kingsway High School marketer, Elaine Woor, who accompanied the pupils.

“The children had an absolute blast and said they would do it again in a heartbeat.

They coped very well with all the challenges put to them and worked well together as a team. They could be heard laughing and having fun, while the other teams bickered from the stress.

Even after the final reveal after hearing they had lost by a mere three points, they were happy for the other team and even gave a congratulatory war cry.”

The programme will start airing on SABC 3 on Saturday, 5 November at 9am. There are 26 episodes and Kingsway will feature in at least 10 of them.
