Shad, mussel poachers netted

The CCPO was also instrumental in nabbing more poachers the following day.

Shad poachers were in for a nasty surprise on Wednesday, 12 October when the Community Crime Prevention Organisation‘s (CCPO) operations manager, Rupert Smit assisted fisheries officers to bust them with 36 shad.

According to CCPO committee member, George Snodey, the fishermen were poaching at Winklespruit beach when the organisation received a report about it.

“With the shad season currently closed, the two fishermen were apprehended and charged,” said Snodey.

The CCPO was also instrumental in nabbing more poachers the following day, after it received a call at about 10am from a fisherman about three people stripping Chain Rocks of mussels and taking bucket loads away.

“Smit, CCPO supervisor, Michael Mkhize, and CCPO and Blue Security patrol officer, Mbuyiselo ‘Triple M’ Mdunjane waited on the roadside for the culprits to emerged and apprehended them with over 300 mussels.

Some were hidden in the bush but they were located after a quick search,” said Snodey.

Fisheries officers, who asked the CCPO to assist them, were on hand to arrest the men, who were all foreigners who are poaching the mussels without permits. The men admitted they were selling them.
